Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) grows outside the uterus, usually on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the lining of the pelvic cavity. This tissue behaves like the normal uterine lining, thickening and shedding with each menstrual cycle, but since it’s outside the uterus, it has nowhere to go. This can cause pain, inflammation, scar tissue, and fertility problems.

OB-GYN care for a patient with endometriosis is focused on managing pain, addressing fertility issues (if necessary), and improving quality of life

  • Diagnosis: The first step is confirming the diagnosis, which might involve exams, ultrasounds, or surgery.
  • Pain management: Treatments like pain relievers, hormonal therapy, and sometimes surgery can help manage the pain.
  • Fertility concerns: Endometriosis can affect fertility, but there are treatment options, including fertility drugs or IVF, to help with conception.

Ongoing care: Endometriosis is a chronic condition, so managing it long-term with a combination of medical treatments, lifestyle changes, and regular check-ups is important.
